Still life Drawing III by arminmersmann Still life Drawing III by arminmersmann
Sticks and Stones

30” x 19” pencil on hot press water color paper.

A simple concept; instead of the usual flowers with their sensual soft shapes, what we undeniably think of as beautiful, I placed some sticks and stones scraped from underneath my deck and filled a beer glass (I drank the beer first). In front I placed two more beer glasses, half filled with water and stuck in just a couple of sticks. The beauty is in the distortions, refractions, and transparencies. With each new layer of glass the sticks changes in detail, sharpness and direction. What first intrigued me was that the refraction of the second largest glass where the water completely hides the sticks and stones in the back glass. Sometimes I draw for just the love of it; this was one of those times.

At least you drank the  first, smart man!!

I love this, Armin!! It makes one appreciate things that might normally be frowned upon or at least ignored in life. I admire your ability to see beauty in seemingly mundane objects and arrangements. I am especially impressed with the realism of this, you even captured the bubbles forming on the twigs and the bits of soil and bark floating in the water. Quite lovely!! I would hang this one my wall, proudly!

i want to believe this is a drawing, but the dev information lists camera details. unless of course you took a picture of the drawing. but why do that when a scanner is a much more logical choice?

drawing or photograph, this gets my :+fav:

The drawing is 19” x 30” it wont fit into a scanner unless it “stitch” it in Photoshop, its just easer to take a digital of it.,, thank you

I just find myself staring at the details of every stroke you put into this piece, Armin, from the delicate details of the sticks... to the amazing distortions of what the water does to the image. It is just a breathtaking piece of work! *sighs and smiles* :)

Love always,

Not this one, I need to get away from photo references once in a while. I just set up the glasses with some good lighting in my studio and went at it. I have no problem with photo references but it has to be my own photo my own creative process, thank you

I feel pretty much the same about photo references. My assumption was based on the size of the piece and the time constraints imposed by natural light. I should have really recognized what I was seeing, instead of basing my assumption on my work situation.

I once tried a pencil drawing of a tree. The hardest part is getting the bark to look real. I gave up on it. This is amazing. It looks like a black and white photograph. My dream in the art world is to be able to make things like this with pencils. I envy your talent.

the photo realism of your pencil work never ceases to amaze me. and some of he subjects are always interesting too. you always seem to have alot of religious symbols or something to that manner in your work, except for these last couple. interesting. simply stellar :+fav:

Godspeed

I go for a while with no religious/social commentary and then it builds up and I have to say “more” then observational appreciation, but its at times like this when these ideas germinate. Thank you /\\\
